The route, which can be done both on foot and by bike, will take you from the centre of Torre Canavese to the Church of San Giacomo, a gem hidden in the middle of the woods. A nice digression leads to Guia Molere, a lake formerly used to soak hemp to make fabric. Upstream there is another pond (almost reduced to a swamp) that feeds the main lake trough a culvert. The pond was used in the past to process the hemp; for this reason it was kept clean from the plants and still appears deeper and clearer than the other. The pillars that supported the walkways, used by farmers to reach the deeper areas of the lake, where they used to soak the hemp, emerge in times of drought. The atmosphere along the track is very scenic and full of old trees, including the “sumpe”, chestnut trees pruned in order to protect them from cattle grazing.
This track can be joined to those that from Vialfrè will take you to Torre Canavese.
Note for bikers: the single track north of the Church of San Giacomo is a single-track and is feasible on the bike only by the most experienced. It is recommended to less experienced cyclists to face the track counter clockwise, so as to do this part downhill section, if necessary off the bike.
